Al Murray (10 Jan 1916 - 27 Sep 1998) was a Scottish Lightweight and Middleweight weightlifitng champion and British record holder in Weightlifting. He was also the official GB head coach from 1948 until 1972. Originally from Fife, he served in the second world war famously developing a physical training programme using shells as weights to help speed up gunners. Later he was one of the first people to advocate resistance training for the rehabilitation of people who suffered from heart attacks (something which is now accepted practice).
Basic Weight Training
Weight training for users of Spur Barbells
Modern Weight Training
Basic Weight Training, which I believe was published in 1957 by Al Murray, gives some great information to getting started with weight training. Next to this we have Weight Training for users of Spur Barbells. This appears to be a course (again written by Al) that would have accompanied the purchase of a Spur Barbell set much like the York courses. It is exceptional in it;s detail for instructions on the clean and press and two hand snatch. My favourite is Modern Weight training, originally published in 1963, this is a great book especially for a new weight trainer.
